This work is titled ‘Hathor's Jig at Lughnasa’. Hathor is referenced as the Egyptian goddess of transformation, joy and celebration; of women and rebirth; the mistress of song and dance, and the bringer of life and comforter in death. Lughnasa is the Irish name for the month of August, and the 1st of August is the midway point between the summer solstice and the autumnal equinox - historically the celebration of the first fruits of the harvest season and of fertility, health and matchmaking. It was celebrated on Croagh Patrick mountain in pre-christian times, and is now an annual Christian ritual of a climb on Reek Sunday. My work on these themes is an installation showing the celebration as dance through transformed objects. I have used found objects to create new ways of being - giving each a chance of form, place, home and conversation. All the objects were found washed up on the beaches of Achill island in sight of Croagh Patrick mountain. Each dancer is 12-18 inches in height. The work is an on-going project.
