An ABC for Misogynists
This series of 26 life size monotype prints, and an accompanying art book. This was the final stage of a socially engaged project with a group of women who shared their images and stories. I wove these into the words and images of the work to look at the language of sexism and turn it on its head, whilst allowing the viewer to think about feminism and action. This is an exploration of communication allowing the subversion of accepted meaning. I aim to expose the colonisation of gender. My work evokes an aesthetic of social interaction and storytelling. There is an accompanying art book - An ABC for Misogynists – which takes the “business as usual” language of everyday sexism, and attempts to decolonise it by creating a new context and reception for this language.
I sought out the often silent voices of women and their experience . My own curation of words and phrases directly from women, and from research (slang dictionaries etc),. The task was to identify words/names/sayings/phrases that women have been called by men. They are collectively derogatory, obscene, patronizing, bland and annoying….primarily, they need to have provoked an awareness of gender, and the fact that this was a man to a women interaction that displayed an assumed power relationship/treated you as a different class of being/thoughtless sexism……
These were women I knew - who came to know each other also from their contribution.
The art book introduces the voices of many women - a collective voice and enterprise, which lifts the series of prints into a different engagement for the viewer.
The images and words were achieved through a socially engaged practice, which continues. The Retort will be a new project looking at what women have said in answer to the language of sexism – what words, what manner of speaking worked best for them?
