Billy series

Collage, painting and photographic transfer.  The pocket contains a packet of the same cigarettes Billy fetched for his mother on a daily basis.  The pocket becomes a metaphor for his memories and losses as an illegitimate child of Annie, who died of TB when he was 13 in the 1930s.  Doors and windows represent dilemmas of ways out and dead ends.
These are visual examinations of the experience for a particular single mother in Ireland,  but also as a metaphor for postcolonial patriarchies which saw the conflation of nationalism and Catholicism over a sustained period. The content references the very specific dilemmas faced by women and biological reality of motherhood.

The pocket as a personal cultural historian.

A transition - inside or outside?
